Martin Luther wrote his 95 thesis because of the sale of indulgences. Indulgences pretty much said that ';if you buy this, all the bad you've done before this point has been erased before the eyes of God!';
How does this constitute as an example of controlling the masses?
The sale of indulgences was a way of controlling the ';sinners'; by taking their money, money needed by the bankrupt churches, and promising forgiveness.
If that answer does not work, how about using the Ideas of the Jihad for Islamic faiths?
A Jihad is a holy war that is against infidels (people not from the Islamic faith), that can be called upon by Muslim leaders whenever necessary. If a Jihad is called, the idea is that all Islamic followers must fight against the infidels, basically preforming a genocide against anyone who is not a Muslim. It's part of the Islamic faith, it controls the Islamic people, it's an ancient concept as well as current.
