Oh wow, I've forgotten much of that terminology, but if I can slightly recall I believe gain is more the term for the sound's actual amplitude -vs- Volume which is more dedicated to a series of amplication of the sound through controlled electrical resistance.. Pending on the equipment at hand.
Gain should be used at the low end level (Mostly at Input)
and Volume at a high end level for control at output.
Either way, they both produce pretty much the same effect, LOUDNESS! : )
