What are “controlled vocabularies” and what is the most familiar example?

Controlled vocabularies are used in subject indexing schemes, subject headings, thesauri and taxonomies. Controlled vocabulary schemes mandate the uses of predefined, authorized terms preselected by the designer of the controlled vocabulary as opposed to natural language vocabularies where there is no restriction on the vocabulary that can be used.

One example is Controlled indexing language - Only approved terms can be used by the indexer to describe the document.
